A return to action for Belles
A return to action for the Belles with a few unavailable for the game, which meant a squad of just 11. Lola C shifted into centre back, as Iris moved to left midfield and Scarlet partnered the returning Eliza in attack.
The Belles started really well, a nice through pass from Caitlin saw Scarlet square the ball for Eliza to score. Scarlet took a nasty collision with the goalkeeper but was ok to continue. The Belles confidence on the ball was great to see with lots of quick passing and movement. Iris cut inside and played a brilliant pass to Eliza but the goalkeeper saved her shot. Then Scarlet fizzed in a cross which flew across the face of the goal.
However the Belles did get a deserved second and it was Eliza again, who collected a pass from Oliwia to score.
The Belles defence were regularly bringing the ball out, Zoe showing fantastic composure at right back and at left back Ava was always wanting the ball.
A corner from Scarlet, was flicked towards the goal by Lola C and there was Ava to nod home from close range. The opposition tried to push forward before halftime but Esme was showing excellent positioning to snuff out any long balls.
At halftime there was much to say other than keep it going. The Belles showed brilliant determination, work rate and quality and more was needed for the second half.
The Belles continued to push for goals with Iris striking the ball towards the goal but it was cleared. Oliwia surged up the right wing and fired a shot just wide. Scarlet was linking play really well and was supported by the energetic Caitlin and Monica, who were a driving force for the team.
Eliza was played through again, rounded the goalkeeper and managed to prod home despite the goalkeeper trying to get back. A well deserved hat trick for Eliza!
The Belles defence showed no letting off, with Zoe yet again demonstrating fantastic one v one defending at right back. Lola C stood strong and met everything that came her way. Darcy collected the ball and went on a lung bursting run that was nearly the full length of the pitch but the goalkeeper saved at her feet.
Eliza then broke clear and squared to Iris who saw her left footed shot saved by the goalkeeper. Oliwia then pinged a low shot that cannoned off the base of the post.
Oliwia wasn't to be denied not long after, as she capitalised on some hesitation in defence and stroked the ball past the goalkeeper. Great to see Oliwia continue to get amongst the goals.
The Belles had given everything in the game, with no subs and the opposition grabbed a late consolation.
The full time whistle went to end what was a very effective and positive performance from the Belles. After the October break it was great to get going again with games and despite having no subs the Belles didn't stop working all game.
Player of the Match went to Iris. She was always a threat out wide, showing determined dribbling and nearly scored with a left footed attempt. Well done Iris and well done Belles!
