Just one of those games

The Vets turned up to Charnwood College full of confidence after 10 goals and 1 conceded in 2 games. Entering through the gates, buildings with smashed windows and falling apart, this looked like the sort of place Mrs Trunchbull would be headteacher.

After changing in the 1980s gymnasium we walked 1 mile to the pitch, with Lee taking the warm up and this time staying on his feet. The pitch was a surface we could play football on, flat and freshly cut.

The game started at a frenetic pace and Sileby took an early lead, the pacey striker ran through on goal and placed into the corner past Aaron who could do nothing to prevent us going a goal down.

Bosworth almost hit back instantly though with Stephens getting a bit of space 30 yards from goal and with the keeper off his line he hit a sweet volley which crashed off the crossbar. We started to probe the Sileby defence with Scott drifting into pockets and Matchett making advancing runs down the right side but we just couldn’t find the breakthrough. We had to be alert at the other end still as Sileby were causing problems for Canavan and Jacko as they looked to push more balls through.

Stephens enthusiasm to get on the end of a cross almost brought charges of GBH as he caught the keeper who jumped on the floor square on the chest with his boot. Confusion on whether he was booked or not, Bosworth made a quick change to protect him from what would have been appeals for everything and replaced him with the returning Stu.

Stu almost made an immediate impact, he got on the end of a Scotty cross and caught the ball well but the goalkeeper made a superb save. Sileby made us pay for missed chances and scored just before half-time, another ball through, Aaron closed down and got a hand to the ball as the striker rounded him and placed the ball into an empty net despite best efforts of a defender to get back to the line.

A frustrating half for Bosworth who despite being two goals down did create chances to still be in the game. Second half Vish came on for Matchett as we changed shape to try and get a hold of the midfield and immediately in the second half we started to get hold of they deep lying playmaker that had caused us problems all first half.

However Sileby put the game out of reach with another two goals in quick succession to make it 4-0.

In the remaining 25 minutes Bosworth were playing 4 upfront and we dominated the final third of the game but every chance we had we could not find a finish and we had to accept it and to be one of those days.

Player of the Match - Stephens
Player of the Match - Stephens

Player of the Match was awarded to Stephens, he was strong on the ball, strong off the ball and nearly scored a worldie from distance, good to have him looking sharp and back to fitness after injury.
