Bosworth push champions all the way in thrilling senior cup final

AFC Market Bosworth produced a battling performance full of heart and character but were narrowly beaten 3-2 by Birstall Stamford Young Boys FC in the Men’s Modern Men Movement Senior Cup Final at Voltage Solutions Stadium.

Played in humid and sunny conditions in front of 197 spectators, the final lived up to expectations with both sides starting at a ferocious tempo. Newly crowned league champions Birstall arrived full of confidence following an emphatic 8-1 victory over Ellistown, but AFC Market Bosworth came into the contest with a clear game plan and determination to cause what would have been the upset of the season.

The opening 25 minutes were evenly contested, with Bosie’s midfield trio of Rory, Dec and Owen working tirelessly to disrupt wave after wave of Birstall attacks. At the back, Blake, Harry, Rees and Connor stood firm, while Player of the Match Matt produced a series of excellent saves to keep his side firmly in the game.

Out wide, Nat and Reuben provided energy and width, while Mike led the line selflessly and once again demonstrated the commitment and work ethic that has made him such an important figure for the club.

Birstall eventually broke the deadlock around the 40-minute mark when one of their trademark long balls into the area was met by a flicked header from their top scorer to make it 1-0 at the break.

The second half began with the league champions pushing hard to put the game beyond reach. AFC resisted bravely until the 55th minute, when a dangerous free-kick delivered toward the back post found its way into the net to double Birstall’s advantage.

At 2-0, relief was visible among the Birstall players and coaching staff - but Bosie were far from finished.

Changes proved pivotal, Mahdi entered the action, Rees moved further forward into his usual attacking role, and Reuben dropped into left-back. The tactical reshuffle injected fresh belief into AFC.

Within 10 minutes, Mahdi cleverly outmanoeuvred the Birstall defence and won a penalty after being fouled inside the area. Captain Rory H stepped up and calmly converted to make it 2-1 and ignite the final once again.

As the game wore on and cramp began affecting several Birstall players, Bosie sensed an opportunity. New signing Mikael replaced the tireless Mike, while Birstall also turned to their bench to steady themselves.

The fresh legs helped the champions briefly regain control and a flowing attacking move restored their two-goal cushion at 3-1.

Yet AFC refused to surrender.

A quality ball forward allowed Rees to break through, his cross was not cleared and Rory hit a half volley which bounced towards goal and fell perfectly for Mikael, who coolly slotted home with acrobatics to make it 3-2 with five minutes remaining and send the crowd into a frenzy.

The closing stages were frantic. Birstall, suddenly under immense pressure, showed visible signs of panic, with the referee issuing two yellow cards to members of their bench. The favourites used every opportunity to slow the game down and run the clock, underlining just how close AFC had pushed them.

Despite a courageous late surge, time eventually ran out on Bosie’s comeback.

While defeat in a cup final always hurts, AFC Market Bosworth can take immense pride from a performance that showcased the quality, resilience and togetherness within the squad. Considering this is only the team’s second season together, reaching and competing so strongly in a major final speaks volumes about the club’s progress.

Special mention was also given to Kieron (Keith) and Alex R, who were unavailable to play but played an important role in helping the squad reach the final.

The players, coaches and families now look ahead to the club’s end-of-season awards evening on Saturday 14th June, where honours including Players’ Player, Player of the Season, Club Person and Most Improved Player will be presented.

Come on you Bosie Boys!
