Vets on fire in first half
The Vets arrived at Ravenstone, again with another squad of 16 going into our second game of the season. From our last game, Vish, Stu and Stephens dropped out with Sammon, “Honest” Neil and Nathan who all came into the squad.
Love Island Lee led the warm up and was instructing the lads to get moving with intensity ready for the game before landing on the deck from an unfortunate slip much to the joy of the squad.
No changes to the back four after a clean sheet last game and safe hands Jim was once again between the sticks. Matt came in on the right wing and we started a new combination up top of Nathan and Scott.
The game got underway and it was a fairly even start but Bosworth moved the ball really well and started to cause problems. A good ball into Scott was lashed home from the edge of the box leaving the keeper standing, he scored a second when Nathan lofted a ball between the centre half’s and Scott’s first touch took it away from the defenders and he hit the ball in with his left, almost a carbon copy of his first goal.
Thompson FC had probed a few times but their final ball was lacking, defensively Jacko and Canavan were dealing with everything in the air with Carl and Lee were pushing high onto the wingers and playing on the front foot.
Thompson’s eventually found a way through, with a little controversy. A ball dropped kindly to the striker who still had a lot to do and he finished on the half volley into the top corner leaving Jim no chance. However Neil had his flag raised for offside, the opposition were incensed calling him a “Nobby Styles Winker” and a “Cheating Punt” but it soon changed to “Honest Neil” as he called the referee over to say it was the furthest player who was offside and was not interfering with play, game on 2-1.
Nathan hit back immediately, relieved given he had missed a few earlier chances, a good ball to him on the right side, had him bearing down on goal and his powerful strike went through the keeper.
3-1 quickly became 4-1 when Nathan nonchalantly curled one top bins with his left foot from about 30 yards, Jack uttered the word wow on the sideline complimenting how elite the shot was.
As the end of the first half came, it could have been more many more, Nathan had missed a couple of chances, Daniel was showing his twinkle toes in the box but the ball fouled him at a pivotal moment and Dicko headed a corner over the bar.
It was a good first half from Bosworth, intensity and aggression on and off the ball with some really good play, 3 of the 4 goals outstanding and good combinations all over the pitch.
At half time we felt the need to freshen it up as we had worked so hard at full-back and in midfield so Matchett came in at right back and Jack came to give us new energy in midfield.
Neither side really created much clear cut in the second half, Jim had to make a smart save when Thompson FC did get through but he was sharp off his line to make the block. At the other end, Bosworth probed the defence but found it hard to get through, the few chances we did create were dealt with by the Keeper.
Matchett made a bursting run into the box but stood on the ball and Jack had an opportunity from a yard out but the keeper protected the ball well in what was a scramble on the line. Jack missing from 1 yard, memories of Barrow several seasons ago. Dave Bell entered the field and caused a few problems with his energetic running, finding himself on the end of a few heavy challenges, also later found himself on the end of Captain Scotty shouting “Go on Taco”.
Sammon entered the field with Neil to see out the remainder of the game as it ended 4-1. An electric first half for Bosworth Vets, a forward line and width that caused lots of problems and a solid foundation defensively with Hutch, Dicko and Jack turning over possession in midfield quickly, we have levelled up. Momentum is important, let’s keep it going.

Scott was given Player of the Match, two outstanding goals and unselfish play bringing others around him into the game.
