Alex showed great leadership for the U16s as they pushed through a tough quarter final against the table toppers!

Today our under 16’s took part in a very difficult and challenging quarter final cup game away to top of the league. With high winds playing a part for both teams the game got underway with AFC creating the early chances. However it was the home team who took the lead from one of many long balls that became there strategy with the high wind behind. Instantly from the kick off being 1-0 down AFC pulled a well worked and deserved equaliser from Nat. This cup game really sprung into life and in the face of some aggressive and sometimes illegal tackles from the home team AFC kept disciplined and trusted there quality of football that was backed up with great attitudes from everyone.

Continuing to work hard Harry F, Alex and Reuben all made the home goal keeper pull off save after save that was most impressive.

However, the home team won a corner that ended up in a defensive mix up and an unfortunate own goal was scored against the run of play.

Half time 2-1 to the home team.

The second half got underway and it was AFC turn to have the high winds behind them. With the pace of both our attackers Harry and Alex it was a nightmare to defend against. With Charlie, Will and Reuben pulling there midfield to pieces, it was inevitable that the opposition would concede. It was with a vicious left foot strike that Alex bought the game back to 2-2.

What was most impressive was Charlie wrestling with the opponents to retrieve the ball out the back of the net to get the game back underway.

AFC could sense an winner and went up yet another gear.

The opposition then had a steady push to retain the lead but the back line of AFC - Harry T, Rue, Ollie E and Ollie W had different ideas. Header after header, tackle after tackle was relentless from the wall of players that protected a well drilled and vocal Adam in goals.

With around 15 minutes left in the game the ball was moved by Rue out left to Nat and with the outside of his right boot threaded a pin point pass thought to a full sprint Alex up front who In turn let go of another thundering left foot shot that was brilliantly saved into the path of Charlie who calmly slotted the winning goal into the back of the net.

A very entertaining and fully deserved 2-3 win on the road for AFC. We march into the semi final in good shape.
