The U13 Dragons faced a tough away fixture against Elford on a warm Saturday morning, with a hard and bobbly pitch making their usual passing game difficult to execute. Despite the testing conditions, the boys showed great determination and adaptability to come away with a well-earned victory.
The match got off to a challenging start for the Dragons, as an early Elford cross was inadvertently turned into their own net, putting the visitors behind. Struggling to adjust to the pitch, the Dragons needed time to find their rhythm. However, their perseverance soon paid off when they were awarded a penalty for handball. Charley G stepped up confidently and slotted the spot-kick home to bring the game back level.
Buoyed by the equalizer, the Dragons began to settle and adjusted their approach, exploiting Elford’s high defensive line with longer balls over the top. This tactical shift paid dividends as a well-delivered cross was met at the back post by Jack, who calmly tapped in to give the Dragons the lead.
As Elford pressed forward in search of an equalizer, the Dragons struck again with a clinical counter-attack. A long ball from the back sent Charlie B racing clear of the defence, and he showed great composure to slot the ball past the keeper, extending the Dragons' lead to 3-1 before the break.
The second half turned into a scrappy battle as both teams struggled with the rising temperature and uneven surface. Chances were limited, but the Dragons defended resolutely to protect their advantage. The game was ultimately put to bed in style when Cam, registering his first goal for the team, unleashed a superb long-range effort that looped over the Elford goalkeeper, sealing a 4-1 victory.
It was a performance that showcased the Dragons' resilience and adaptability. Unable to play their preferred passing game, they dug deep, adjusted their tactics, and made the most of their opportunities. Cam was deservedly awarded Player of the Match for his commanding midfield performance and a stunning debut goal.
A hard-fought win on the road, and the Dragons will take plenty of positives into their next fixture. Well done, boys!
