Belles Overcome The Aztecs

Belles Overcome The Aztecs

Chad Brindley1 Apr - 21:09

A good win for the Belles with Esme and Oliwia being awarded Players of the Match.

The final away game of the season for the Belles and probably the longest journey of the season. The Belles were without Chloe and Lols, but switched to a 3-5-2 system with Ava and Iris occupying the wing back roles.

The Belles went close early on, a deflected corner clipped off the bar and then from another corner, Darcy headed over. The Belles defensive trio of Lola, Monica and Captain Lois were looking very comfortable in possession as the Belles continued to push for the opener. It didn't take long after for the goal to come with the creative Oliwia at the centre of the move. The ball was worked into the midfield with Oliwia's clever play sending Eliza in on goal as she side footed home.

Caitlin's influence on the game grew by every minute as she played the ball to Amie as her cross found Iris, who struck a shot but the goalkeeper saved.

A swift opposition counter attack followed as the striker powered in a low shot with Esme miraculously diving low to her right to save.

Evie was another player who was seeing lots of the ball as her free kick fizzed past the Belles attack. Then Caitlin broke through but the goalkeeper bravely saved her attempt.

A corner soon followed, as Oliwia whipped in the ball which was diverted into the goal via the defender, to extend the Belles lead just before half time.

At halftime we knew the second half was going to be different, playing against the wind and uphill but the Belles were tasked with keep trying to play football high up the pitch.

The second half started well for the Belles, who were looking very composed in possession. Lots of little give and goes were flowing, with Caitlin, Evie and Oliwia continuing to impress.

A driving run from Iris nearly created an opportunity for Scarlet, as Darcy's shot stung the palms of the goalkeeper. Unfortunately we lost Lola to an ankle injury which was really tough to take as she has worked so hard to make today's game. Monica then dispossessed their winger and played the ball forward to Amie then on the opposite side Ava was having a good battle with the opposite winger. Her tenacious play saw her coming out on top numerous times.
In-between them was captain Lois who was using the ball well but also anticipating everything the opposition could try.

The chances continued for the Belles, Scarlet firing a free kick effort just wide then Eliza striking wide. However the Belles did get a third goal, Caitlin's pass was perfect for the scampering Darcy to finish low into the corner.

The Belles were looking really comfortable even with the windy conditions doing it's best to aid the opposition. However they were all working hard with and without the ball. Esme rushed off her line to clear well, which is something she's worked on recently and improved massively in.

The Belles saw the game out and could be very proud of the display. It was tough conditions, really windy, small bobbly pitch and on a slope. But the football that was played, particularly in the second half was quality. They girls deserve huge credit for this and it was such a positive performance from them all. Players of the match was awarded to Oliwia and Esme. Oliwia for oozing quality throughout the whole game. She played right wing back and centre midfield both with good effect. Her ability on the ball today was fantastic! Also to Esme for a magnificent save in the first half and also demonstrating her improvement in positioning herself well in her penalty box. It was brilliant to see!

Well done Belles and well done Oliwia and Esme!

A special mention to the fabulous Belles mums who are there every week to show their support. They enjoyed their long mother's day trip to watch the game and we hope they had a brilliant day!
